Are There Hail Proof Roofs?

While there is no such thing as a completely hail proof roof, there are many roofing systems that offer high levels of resistance even to large hail and to the high winds and heavy rain that are usually associated with hail. Here are some options:
- Class-4, impact resistant shingles – these special shingles are the top of the range in the asphalt shingle category. These special solutions are extensively tested among laboratory circumstances to make sure that they can stand up to large hail, with steel balls being dropped repeatedly onto the shingle surface from various heights;
- Metal roofs – while plain sheet metal can be harmed by impact, especially by the impact caused by large hail, stronger alloys, such as steel, can stand up to hailstorms. Your metal roof might sustain some minor damage during hailstorms, but that damage is likely to be only cosmetic in nature;
- Rubber roofs – rubber membranes are synthetic materials used on flat or low-sloping roofs and the hardiest materials when it comes to resistance to hail. Rubber materials have some limitations in terms of color, most of them being available in white and black only, but that should not be a problem with flat roofs.
