Protecting Your Roof from Hot, Dry Summers
The summer heat can be very harmful for your roof, especially if it is associated with dryness the most common issues being related to overheating. Fortunately, there are some great and easy ways to protect your roof from dry heat – here are a few tips:
- Understand the process – the UV rays and the heat of the sun work slowly, causing damage by gradually drying out the oils in your asphalt shingles and evaporating the water that is naturally contained in the wooden components of your roof. The most common symptoms of sun damage include the warping, blistering and cracking of the shingles and of the beams in your roof;
- Prevention measures – to protect your roof in a hot, dry climate area, you first of all need to ensure that it does not overheat. All you need for that is two properly sized roof vents, one at the bottom of the roof and another one at the top, to keep the air moving continuously in the attic. The other thing you need is UV protection for the roof surface – you can achieve that by applying a suitable roof coating and reapplying the coat at regular intervals, every couple of years, as specified in the product instructions.
