Does Your Bay Area Roof Have Flood Damage? Here's What to Do
The climate in the Bay Area is harsh and capricious, being especially hard on local roofs. Water damage is among the most common climate-related roofing issues – here is what you should do if you get a huge leak or water in your attic:
- Contain the water – grab buckets and other containers and place them under the leak to hold up the water. If the leak affects your rooms, remove the carpets from your floors and the furniture to reduce the impact; do the same if the flooding affects your attic, too, contain the water and move your belongings to safety;
- Find the source of the leak – wait until the storm goes away, then go to your attic or climb up to the roof on a ladder and check for the gaps through which water could enter. The source of the leak is probably right above the damp patches in your rooms or in your attic;
- Document the damage for your insurance claim – take pictures and record videos to be able provide evidence to back up your insurance claim;
- Mitigate the damage – cover the roof in foil to prevent further water damage before the roof repair is started.
