How Important Is Attic Insulation in Adding to The Health and Duration of A Roof?

Attic insulation, whether in the form of blankets installed on the attic floor, in the form of boards, spray-in foam or other, is essential for maintaining the health and longevity of your roof as well as for ensuring that the energy exchange between your building interior and the exterior environment is kept to the minimum. Here is how your insulation will do all that:
- Air leakage control – experts say that around 40% of the heated air in a home escapes through the roof if it meets not obstacle. Attic insulation will provide the barrier that stops that leakage, thus reducing the amount of energy that you need for heating your rooms;
- Ice dam prevention – without attic insulation, the warm air that rises from your rooms will travel all the way to the roof. When the roof is covered in snow, the warm air will melt some of that snow, turning the snow into water that runs down on the roof slope and freezes again at the edge – that is how ice dams are formed. The long icicles can cause water damage as well as structural damage by dragging down the roof edge – problems that can be prevented with suitable attic insulation.
