What Are Roof Shingles Made Of?

Roof shingles are among the most common and most popular roofing materials in the entire country, preferred for low costs, durability and attractive appearance. Here are some details about the making of roof shingles:
- Asphalt shingles – these varieties use a mat made from organic material or fiberglass, asphalt for adding waterproofing qualities and a layer of mineral granules on the top to ensure the material’s weather resistance;
- Wood shingles – The two most common wood types used for making shingles are redwood and cedar, both varieties dense and very resistant. Modern wood shingles are treated for fire resistance, but even so, the material is considered to be a fire hazard in many regions, therefore it is not very widely used;
- Rubber shingles – these shingles use a mat made from EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), a material also used to form the single-ply membrane on flat roofs. The rubber material ensures superior strength and durability to the roof.
